Why monks choose the Skelligs? – Jesus Christ had his refuge, these are some of the reasons we feel the monks sought out remote places, high up on a wave-lashed rock out in the Atlantic Ocean, at the very edge of the known universe, they have to have felt, close to God.
A monks life – they adapted well to their environment. Their diet consisted of fish, birds, bird’s eggs and seal steaks. They had goats and sheep and grew cereals and vegetables. Surplus food was traded for vellum, tools etc with passing ships.
